How to Prepare for Rhinoplasty Surgery

Rhinoplasty

Proper preparation is one of the most important factors in achieving a smooth rhinoplasty experience and beautiful, lasting results. This step-by-step guide covers everything you need to do in the weeks leading up to your surgery — and what to expect during recovery.

2 Weeks Before Surgery

The two-week window before your rhinoplasty is when your choices have the greatest impact on your safety and results. Follow these guidelines carefully:

Stop Smoking

Smoking significantly impairs healing by restricting blood flow and oxygen delivery to tissues. Nicotine causes blood vessels to narrow, which increases the risk of delayed wound healing, infection, and poor scarring. You must stop all forms of nicotine — cigarettes, vaping, patches, and chewing tobacco — at least two weeks before surgery and for at least two weeks after.

Discontinue Certain Medications & Supplements

Many over-the-counter medications and supplements thin the blood and can cause excessive bleeding during and after surgery. Stop the following unless your treating physician advises otherwise:

  • Aspirin and ibuprofen (use paracetamol/acetaminophen instead)
  • Vitamin E supplements
  • Fish oil and omega-3 supplements
  • Herbal supplements including ginkgo biloba, garlic capsules, and ginseng
  • Blood thinners — always consult your cardiologist before stopping prescribed medications

Always disclose your full medication list to Dr. Dawood's team at your pre-operative appointment.

Avoid Alcohol

Alcohol dehydrates you, impairs immune function, and interacts dangerously with anaesthesia. Avoid all alcoholic drinks for at least two weeks before your procedure.

Arrange Your Recovery Support

You will need a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you for the first 24 hours. Arrange this now — do not leave it to the last minute.

1 Week Before Surgery

Prepare Your Recovery Space

Set up a comfortable recovery area at home before you leave for surgery. You will want:

  • Extra pillows to keep your head elevated at a 30-45 degree angle — this reduces swelling
  • A humidifier, especially if you live in a dry climate
  • Entertainment within easy reach (remote controls, phone charger, books)
  • Loose, front-fastening clothing you can put on without pulling over your head

Stock Up on Supplies

Shop for the following before your surgery day:

  • Saline nasal spray (as recommended by your surgeon)
  • Cold compress packs or a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a cloth
  • Paracetamol (your surgeon will prescribe stronger pain relief if needed)
  • Soft, easy-to-eat foods — soups, yoghurt, smoothies, scrambled eggs
  • Straws (you should avoid excessive jaw movement early on)

Day of Surgery

Fasting Instructions

You must not eat or drink anything — including water — for at least 6–8 hours before your scheduled anaesthesia time. Your team will confirm the exact fasting window at your pre-op appointment. Taking any food or drink before surgery can force cancellation of your procedure for safety reasons.

What to Wear

Wear comfortable, loose clothing that opens at the front — a zip-up hoodie or button-down shirt is ideal. Avoid anything that must be pulled over your head. Remove all jewellery and nail polish before arriving. Do not wear contact lenses on the day of surgery.

What to Bring

  • Your national ID or passport
  • Your pre-operative paperwork and any prescribed medications
  • A responsible adult to drive you home — you will not be permitted to drive
  • A phone charger and something to occupy you before you go into theatre

What to Expect During Recovery

Recovery from rhinoplasty is a gradual process. The most important thing to understand is that swelling takes months — not days — to fully resolve. Here is a realistic timeline:

  • Days 1–3

This is the most uncomfortable period. Expect swelling, bruising around the eyes, nasal congestion, and mild to moderate pain well controlled by prescribed medication. Keep your head elevated at all times, even while sleeping. Apply cold compresses around (not on) your nose.

  • Week 1

A nasal splint will be in place for the first 7–10 days. Most bruising begins to fade. You will return to the clinic for your first post-operative check and splint removal. Avoid bending over, blowing your nose, or strenuous activity.

  • 2 Weeks

Most visible bruising is gone and significant swelling has reduced. Many patients feel comfortable returning to desk-based work. Avoid glasses resting on your nose for 6 weeks. No contact sports.

  • 3 Months

You will see approximately 70–80% of your final result. The nose looks much more refined, though subtle swelling — particularly on the tip — is still present and normal.

  • 6–12 Months

The nose has reached its final shape. Swelling has completely resolved, scar tissue has softened, and the full outcome of your surgery is visible. This is the result you will enjoy for life.

General Recovery Tips

  • Sleep on your back with your head elevated for at least 3 weeks
  • Avoid sun exposure to the nose for 3 months (use SPF 50+ when outdoors)
  • Stay hydrated and eat a balanced diet rich in protein and vitamin C
  • Attend all follow-up appointments — they exist to ensure your best outcome
  • Do not judge your final result until at least 6 months post-surgery
